Counting By Fives

Counting by Fives doesn’t need to be hard.  In Birch class, we saved the pumpkin seeds from our fall pumpkins and use them as manipulatives.  In this activity, students were asked to solve how many pumpkin seeds were in their bowls, but they were not allowed to count by ones.  This student chose to organize her seeds by fives and label her count to make it easier to track.  When each student finished counting their own seeds, their sums were added together to solve how many pumpkin seeds our pumpkin had.

Cross Country Practice Cancelled Tomorrow Morning

Cancellation of TDESAA Events for Tuesday, September 26, 2017

Parents and students of LLPS & da Vinci, please note that there will not be a Cross Country Practice tomorrow morning. Weather permitting we will continue as usual on Thursday and the meet should not be affected on Friday.

A Message from TDESAA Program Co-ordinator for TDSB:
“Providing opportunities for students to be physically active in a safe and caring environment is a priority for all of us.

Today’s decision to cancel all TDSSAA and TDESAA events was made in consultation with Environment Canada’s forecast and the TDSB’s Extreme Weather Policy.

Tomorrow’s forecast is similar in nature to today.  As a result, all TDSSAA and TDESAA outdoor scheduled events for Tuesday, September 26th, 2017 will be postponed.”

Thank you for your understanding.

Student and Parent Census

The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) conducts its system-wide Student and Parent Census every 4-5 years to help the Board understand the demographic makeup, the in-school and out-of-school experiences, and the ongoing needs of its student population. The intent is to use the data collected directly from students and parents to help the system and individual schools develop strategies and adjust supports that further strengthen the school community and help every student succeed.

April 2017 is Census Month at the TDSB! We will conduct our third Student and Parent Census, which will include Grade 4-6 students for the first time, along with Grade 7-12 students. Students will complete the Census in class. Parents of JK-Grade 6 students will also be invited again to fill out the Parent Census form. Their forms will come home with students in April 2017.

This survey is voluntary. However, we encourage you to participate so that the census results will reflect the voices of all parents at our school.

Learn more about our previous Census findings through our Census Publications.

For further information about our Census, please contact Research & Information Services at or 416-394-7404.

Education Day – from TDSB Chair Chris Bolton

Good morning,

The growth of our province depends on high-quality, publicly-funded education. Education is the second largest item in the provincial budget and with the upcoming fall election, it is important that our community have the facts needed to make an informed decision on October 6.

To raise awareness about public education issues the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association has declared today, September 20, Education Day. In support, many Toronto School Board Trustees are organizing meetings across the system to offer our community an opportunity to:

  • Learn more about issues affecting public education in Ontario
  • Hear from each of your local candidates from the four major provincial parties and understand their position on key issues
  • Speak up and ask questions

Meetings are being held across the city and we hope that you will join us and attend your local event and learn about the issues impacting Toronto schools.
