Reconstruction of the track to eliminate the serious drainage problem just started this morning – finally, after nearly three years! The safety fence was set up this morning and we expect the construction to begin by Monday, if not sooner. The west side of the track will be ripped up and re-graded for proper drainage to the catch basins, then resurfaced. The field will be re-graded for drainage, then re-sodded.
Construction will be from 6:30 am to 2:30 pm on weekdays. We anticipate about 4 – 6 weeks for construction; then longer for the grass to grow.
The driveway into the playground will be secured access for construction vehicles during construction.
For safety’s sake, parents and students must enter and exit the playground via the south end of the tennis courts. That gate will be opened daily. Or please use the Spadina entrance.
Deliveries ( gravel, construction materials etc) are supposed to happen prior to the start of the school day.
All trucks will be escorted into the playground. I have asked for no deliveries between 8:15 and 9:00 am.
It should be very interesting for our students to see how we adjust the landscape to meet our needs – bulldozers and heavy machinery are always a big hit with our little ones!
The bad news:
The track and most of the field will not be available until next fall. This means significant reduction in the amount of play space for children over May and June.
We will be asking students to limit ball-throwing games, since we won’t be able to go into the field to retrieve stray balls.
For safety’s sake, parents and students must enter and exit the playground via the south end of the tennis courts. Please do not use the driveway.
We will be supervising students very closely during this construction.
Thanks to all of our parents who advocated for this much-needed repair. After many promises, cancellations and delays, we are just glad it is finally happening, however inconvenient.
